EfferGuard

White effervescent granules of potassium metabisulfite with small amounts of potassium bicarbonate and citric acid, used in winemaking as an antioxidant and anti-microbial.

Product Specs

Thanks to its effervescence, EfferGuard dissolves in wine and releases the right amount of SO2 on the surface and slowly along the whole tank height. It is suitable for all situations in which it is difficult or not convenient to homogenize an SO2 addition by mixing (tanks with large headspace, barrels, small capacity tanks, etc.).

The presence of potassium bicarbonate does not affect the acidity of the wine (at a dosage of 0.22 lb/1000 gal the theoretical loss of titratable acidity could be equal to the instrumental error of the analysis).

Application: Useful in all situations where anti-microbial or antioxidant protection is required; on grapes or musts during transport, in wooden barrels, in tanks that are otherwise difficult to completely homogenize (specifically the upper half of the tank), or in ullaged tanks.

Recommended Dosage: Add EfferGuard directly to wine from the top of the tank or at the bottom of the grape transport hoppers/wagons/gondolas. Adding EfferGuard while mixing the tank will hasten dispersion for very large tanks or very large additions.

The SO2 conversion rate of EfferGuard is calculated at 37.5%. To increase the SO2 level by 10 ppm, add 0.226 lb/1000 gal.
