The sodium salt of benzoic acid, sodium benzoate is used as a cosolvent in the pharmaceutical industry to improve solubility. It is also used as a treatment of hyperammonemia, a disorder which causes ammonia accumulation in the blood. Sodium benzoate is odorless with an astringent/sweetish taste, soluble in water and alcohol, combustible and comes as white granular or crystals.
